MovieBabble’s Dream Movie Projects

There’s a lot of great, inventive movies that come out every single year.  Whether it be a wholly original drama or the next new superhero movie, there’s certainly a lot to love about film these days.  But that got me thinking, what are some dream movie projects that I’d love to see in the near future?  My mind began racing with fun possibilities.  Let’s take a look at what films could dominate with both critics and fans if made:

Tiger Woods Biopic

Considering the events of the last ten years, a film circling around the the professional career of Tiger would be a fascinating tale.  If I were a casting director, I’d call Chadwick Boseman’s agent right away as he would make a solid onscreen Tiger considering his acting chops and somewhat similar appearance.

But what director would fit the project?  That’s easy: Martin Scorsese.

Martin Scorsese would be more than ideal considering his ability to depict prominent figures as they fall from grace.  Although Tiger’s story may still have another chapter left to tell, the idea of such a film could have serious Oscar potential.

Detective Film Written and Directed by Quentin Tarantino

A pure detective film hasn’t been seen in theaters for quite some time, mainly because it’s really hard to keep an audience in the dark about who has committed a crime or who’s behind a certain action.  Many creative minds stay away from the genre completely for this reason.  However, with Quentin Tarantino’s superb writing skills and ability to create great worlds with every film, a detective film just might be a great avenue for him to flex his muscles.

I can picture it now, Samuel L. Jackson in a trench coat attempted to solve a crime wave led by an unknown assailant who later turns out to be Michael Madsen.  Sign me up!

Basketball Film Directed by Ryan Coogler

There hasn’t been a great basketball film in awhile, mainly because it’s incredibly difficult to shoot and make it look good since basketball is such a skill-oriented sport.  However, from his work on Creed, we’ve seen that Ryan  Coogler is focused on showing great action in sports without unnecessary cuts.  We’ve also seen his amazing skill in providing great drama to go along with popcorn thrills.  Just look at what he did with Slyvester Stallone in Creed!

In my head this hypothetical film would take shape as Whiplash for basketball players, focusing on a team dealing with an overbearing coach that pushes them beyond their limits.  I picture Michael Shannon playing that coach with his intense stare and flare for the insane in his films.  We could get some serious physical and psychological drama with players fighting through injuries and fatigue to get some type of gratification from their coach.  These character moments in combination with great basketball action could lead to a serious Oscar contender.

Donald Trump Biopic

Politics aside, this would make for a fascinating film if the right team is assembled for it.

From land mogul to quite possibly the most controversial political figure ever to walk this Earth, Donald Trump has lived a wild life that only the best screenwriters could even fathom.  For this film to work, you obviously need a great central character to play Trump.  Although he’s already played a similar role in House of Cards, Kevin Spacey would probably make a great Trump considering his flare for great impressions.  Plus, if you gave him a hideous combover he might look pretty similar.

Considering this would be a political movie of sorts, there needs to be expertly crafted dialogue to power the story.  Enter Aaron Sorkin.  His ability to create amazingly crafted dialogue would be an incredible addition to the film, making it truly one of my dream movie projects.

Western Directed by Christopher Nolan

Practically every movie Christopher Nolan makes is already one of my dream movie projects, but this one may take the cake.  A great mind like Nolan should always try to move into new genres, and he has yet to make a Western.  Can you imagine what he might add to this genre?  While we’ve gotten some good Westerns in recent years, we haven’t gotten a darker, grounded Western in decades.  Imagine Nolan regular Christian Bale leading the charge against an outlaw played by Tom Hardy while his sage mentor, played by Michael Caine, helps him along the way.

All of Nolan’s films are technically brilliant.  They each have a distinctive flair.  A Nolan Western would add a completely different element to the classic feel of the West.

Horror Film Directed by Denis Villeneuve

After the release of Arrival last November, Denis Villeneuve has since become a big name director that many studios want to helm major films.  After he tackles Blade Runner 2049, Villeneuve needs to make a horror film.  Villeneuve is a fascinating director that makes wholly original films.  All of his films discuss very mature themes and are incredibly engaging.  I imagine a Villeneuve to be similar to a film like The Babadook.  It’ll be super scary, tense, and tough to watch, but it’ll also have an amazing subtext that’ll make you think.

A lot of great directors stay away from horror.  But, Villeneuve has ventured into similar into darker movies before.  This makes the jump to one of my dream movie projects fairly straightforward.

Philadelphia 76ers Film Starting in 2013

Since I’m a serious Philadelphia sports fan, there’s definitely some bias here.  However, there’s a really cool, Moneyball-like film to be told with the recent history of the 76ers.

For those unaware of the story, let me enlighten you.

Devoid of assets such as draft picks and young, promising players, the Sixers enlisted the help of notable analytical mind, Sam Hinkie.  The team went into serious “tank” mode for multiple years, trading away every somewhat promising player in an attempt to hoard future draft picks.  This strategy was implemented with the idea that in order to win multiple championships as an NBA organization, you need a core group of generational talents.  Many of these talents are only available within free agency or the first one or two picks in the NBA draft.  So, an emphasis on losing while obtaining a plethora of future draft picks may set up a team for success in theory.

The Sixers were pretty abysmal for a few years with the worst of it coming in the 2015-2016 season where the team finished 10-72.  Whether or not the Sixers become a great team from this idea has yet to be seen.  But, either way this story is a fascinating look into a Moneyball scenario or the weird mind of Sam Hinkie.

In each instance, there’s a great movie to be told will remain one my dream movie projects.
